Playfull design, the work of Kay Bojesen (1886-1958)

Kay Bojesen graduated as a silversmith in 1910 after completing his apprenticeship at Georg Jensen. He embraced the movement towards functionalism in Danish crafts and co-founded ‘den Permanente’ – a showcase retail shop featuring the best of Danish Design.

In the 1930s, he explored his passion for wood by creating animals that embodied his belief that a product should be “round and soft and feel good in your hand”, that “the lines in a design should smile”, and that animals should never be an exact replica of nature.

With all of these principles in mind, Kay Bojesen created treasured and beloved characters that appeal to the child within us all.

Built around the largest private collection of Kay Bojesen in Denmark, the exhibition gives an overview of the artist’s many talents from his silverware to his wooden monkeys
