The expression "Golden Age", which tends to glorify the history of a nation, appeared in the Danish press in 1890 to evoke the flourishing of culture, science and arts in the time of neo-classicism, romanticism and realism. It is a quality label.

In the autumn of 2020, for the first time in France in nearly thirty-five years, the Petit Palais is presenting an exhibition celebrating the golden age of Danish painting (1800 to 1864).The exhibition, jointly organised by the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK, Copenhagen) and the Petit Palais, includes more than 200 works by leading artists of this period, including Christoffer Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Martinus Rørbye and Constantin Hansen. The exhibition has benefited from research carried out over many years and offers a comprehensive analysis of this artistic period. It focuses on a number of key themes relevant to the social, political, economic and cultural conditions of 19th century Denmark. At the same time, it provides a broad overview of familiar subjects such as life in Copenhagen, the artist at work, travelling, landscape painting and the family.
